Apples, Water, Cinnamon
It's rare to find a business that operates for decades on the principles it was founded upon, never compromising quality for efficiency, and never putting profits over integrity. American Spoon is just such a business. When Justin Rashid and Chef Larry Forgione founded it in 1982, their goal was to produce "the finest fruit preserves in the world from Michigan fruit." Justin would seek superb fruit varieties grown by local farmers, and Larry would create recipes to celebrate them.
Thirty-seven years later, Justin, along with his wife, Kate Marshall, and their son, Noah, still operate American Spoon. They've never wavered from their mission, and they still maintain close-knit relationships with their farmers to source the best possible fruit varieties. Each batch is made at their Petoskey, MI, kitchen by their small team of skilled cooks. They prepare the fruits by hand and cook them with care in small-batch copper kettles, resulting in lush, full-flavored jams.
Their take on a favorite fall classic, Apple Butter, is truly inspired. Made with just three ingredients, Michigan apples, water, and cinnamon, the pure apple flavor shines. One bite and you can almost feel the crisp fall breeze and cozy scarves.
We are so excited to feature American Spoon Apple Butter as our September 2020 Featured Jam. Available while supplies last á la carte and in recommended PB&J and AB&J pairings.
Almond Butter with Wildflower Honey & Sea Salt
Heirloom Mission Almonds, Raw Organic Wildflower Honey, Jacobsen Sea Salt
Almond trees have been cultivated in the United States since the mid-1700’s when Franciscan Padres planted the first seedlings brought over from Spain. Almonds flourished here, particularly in California, where they became an important element of the state’s agricultural and culinary identity.
The heirloom Mission variety almond, discovered in Texas in 1891, derives from a single chance seedling. Literally a late bloomer with smaller, denser buds and shorter, darker kernels than larger, more popular and “attractive” varieties such as Nonpareil, Mission almonds like a longer, slower roast time and offer a deeper, more concentrated flavor. We think Mission almonds are perfect for almond butter, and we hope you agree! Made only with freshly roasted and milled Mission almonds blended with raw wildflower honey and sea salt, our Almond Butter is intentionally simple and straight-up delicious.
